Scouring

Wool washing is a process in which grease, sweat residue and fine mineral contaminants, such as sand, are skirted. Wool fibres straight off a sheep contain a large quantity of accompanying substances removal of which is inevitable to enable further textile processing (e.g. yarn fabrication). These natural contaminants of raw wool, also called wool "in the grease", are:

- grease 2 - 25% (with relation to raw wool mass),
- dry sweat residue 2 - 12%,
- dirt 5 - 40%.

The above mentioned contaminants are removed from wool fibres in pre - wash process. The procedure consists in the wool fiber treatment in a few (4 - 8) tubs of washer in turn between which there is a flow of detergent bath. Effective removal of grease, sweat residue and dirt from wool demands usage of detergents and alkali agents as well as a proper wash temperature within 55 - 70oC limits.
